‎Ogun Governorship Race: Iyabo Obasanjo Steps Down, Endorses Adeola

Fresh political alignments have emerged within the Ogun State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC), as governorship aspirant Iyabo Obasanjo announced the suspension of her 2027 ambition, throwing her weight behind Senator Solomon Olamilekan Adeola, who emerged as the party’s consensus candidate on Monday.
    ‎
‎Obasanjo, daughter of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, confirmed her decision in a statement issued on Monday, citing the outcome of a high-level APC caucus meeting in Abeokuta where Adeola was adopted as the preferred flagbearer.
    ‎
‎“I congratulate Senator Adeola and wish him every success,” she said.
    ‎
‎“I also thank the state and national leaders of our great party for the opportunity to participate in the nomination process.”
    ‎
‎Her withdrawal marks a significant boost for the consolidation efforts within the ruling party, coming amid broader moves by stakeholders to present a united front ahead of the 2027 governorship contest.
    ‎
‎The adoption of Adeola, popularly known as Yayi, is part of a wider political strategy championed by Governor Dapo Abiodun and key party leaders to ensure power shifts to Ogun West Senatorial District, which has yet to produce a governor since the state’s creation.
    ‎
‎Party insiders say the latest development reflects growing acceptance of the consensus arrangement, with several aspirants either stepping down or pledging support to avoid internal divisions.
    ‎
‎Obasanjo acknowledged the evolving dynamics, noting that her decision was taken in the interest of party cohesion and collective progress.
    ‎
‎“Based on these developments, I have decided to suspend my gubernatorial aspiration,” she stated.
    ‎
‎“To my supporters across Ogun State, I remain deeply grateful for your steadfast support and unwavering trust.”
    ‎
‎The APC leadership in the state has continued consultations across party structures, seeking to harmonise interests and prevent post-primary fallout that could weaken its electoral chances.
    ‎
‎Observers note that Obasanjo’s decision may trigger further realignments, as other aspirants reassess their positions in light of the party’s apparent direction.
    ‎
‎Adeola, who represents Ogun West in the Senate, has steadily gained backing following his unveiling at the Abeokuta caucus meeting, with stakeholders citing his political experience, grassroots network, and alignment with broader zoning considerations.
    ‎
‎While formal primaries are yet to be conducted, the unfolding developments signal an early crystallisation of the APC’s governorship race in Ogun, with the party prioritising unity and strategic zoning.
    ‎
‎Political analysts, however, caution that sustaining consensus will require continued engagement with aggrieved interests and transparent processes as the election cycle progresses.
    ‎
‎For now, the withdrawal of a high-profile aspirant like Iyabo Obasanjo underscores the shifting momentum within the APC, firmly tilting in favour of Adeola as the party intensifies preparations for the 2027 contest.
