Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, has announced that the State Medical Center of Excellence, a 250-bed hospital in Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta, will be commissioned in December 2025.
The facility, which was built but left incomplete by the previous administration, was recently inspected by the governor to assess the progress of ongoing works.
In a statement by the Governor’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Kayode Akinmade, Governor Abiodun revealed that the hospital will be managed in partnership with the Abuja Medical Center of Excellence, which counts King’s College Hospital among its international collaborators. He described the Ogun facility as a “spoke” of the Abuja Medical Center of Excellence and said it would serve as a primary healthcare hub for residents.
“We are looking forward to the completion of this project. You can see the exterior is looking very nice, we’ve started landscaping, they’ve built an entrance canopy and the gate, oxygen equipment is working. I have told them to double up on manpower so that we commence operations in the next 2–3 weeks. My intention is to commission this project sometime in December. This will be one of our Christmas presents to Ogun State,” Abiodun said.
The governor noted that the facility would significantly reduce medical tourism, as residents currently travel from Ogun State to Lagos or other neighbouring states for medical care.
“By the time this hospital is commissioned, all that will stop. Patients from the hinterlands of Oyo, Osun, and Ekiti States often pass through Ogun before getting to Lagos. This will be a more convenient location for them to access quality healthcare,” he added.
Abiodun explained that the hospital would be operated through a public-private partnership with Healthshare Services Limited to ensure high standards of service. The project manager, Dr. Frank Etang of Healthshare Integrated Solutions, confirmed that the hospital is on track for December commissioning, with key facilities including the basement, ground floor, Radiology, laboratory, consulting rooms, theater, ICU, and wards nearing completion.
“We are presently rounding up with the first floor where we have the theater, ICU, and the wards, so we are ready for that commissioning,” Etang said.
