A few hours after Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara dumped the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the All Progressives Congress (APC), Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke on Tuesday evening announced his defection to the Accord Party, barely 24 hours before the party’s 2026 governorship primary scheduled for Wednesday.
Adeleke confirmed his move in a statement shared on his official X handle, declaring Accord as his new political platform ahead of next year’s governorship election.
“Today, we unveiled the Accord Party, our new platform for the good people of Osun State. From Osun West to Osun East to Osun Central, this is our party, our new platform for victory come August next year,” he wrote.
Shortly after the announcement, Accord Party flags were seen flying outside the Osun State Government House, where Adeleke was reportedly holding a meeting with leaders of his former party.
The governor’s defection marks the culmination of months of tension within the PDP in Osun State. Adeleke had earlier resigned from the party on November 4, 2025, citing the lingering national leadership crisis as his reason for leaving. His resignation letter, addressed to the PDP chairman in Sagba/Abogunde Ward 2, Ede, expressed appreciation for the party’s support throughout his political rise.
“Due to the current crisis of the national leadership of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), I hereby resign my membership of the People’s Democratic Party with immediate effect,” he wrote.
“I thank the People’s Democratic Party for the opportunities given to me for my elections as a Senator (representing Osun West) and as Governor of Osun State under the People’s Democratic Party.”
The PDP ward chairman acknowledged receipt of the resignation on the same day.
Adeleke’s switch to Accord adds a major twist to Osun’s political landscape ahead of the 2026 governorship election and comes on a day of dramatic realignments in national politics.
