The Abia State Government has announced the completion and functionalisation of 102 Primary Health Centres (PHCs) across the state as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen healthcare delivery at the grassroots.
The Commissioner for Health, Dr. Ngozi Kanu, disclosed this while briefing journalists on the progress of healthcare infrastructure projects in the state. He said the initiative was in line with Governor Alex Otti’s vision to make quality healthcare accessible to all Abians.
According to Kanu, work is ongoing on the second batch of 52 renovated and equipped PHCs, bringing the total number of functionalised centres to 102.
“The remaining 98 PHCs will be fully renovated and equipped before the end of the year,” he stated. “Similarly, 50 or more out of the 79 World Bank Impact PHCs will be completed and put to use before the year ends. By December, we expect to have 250 or more functional PHCs across the state.”
The Commissioner expressed satisfaction with the increasing public confidence in the PHCs, attributing it to the government’s renewed investment in primary healthcare infrastructure.
He further revealed that the construction of three specialist hospitals in Abia is ongoing, adding that the projects have been reviewed to ensure they meet world-class standards.
Kanu also disclosed that Governor Otti has directed the immediate operationalisation of the solar power project at the SDG Hospital, Ugwunagbo, to guarantee uninterrupted electricity supply for hospital staff and patients.
In addition, the Commissioner announced that the state government is partnering with world-class hospitals in Sweden and other international health institutions on several medical outreach programmes.
“One of such partnerships is with Pro-Health International, which will conduct a comprehensive medical outreach from November 16 to 22, 2025,” he said.
Dr. Kanu reaffirmed the Otti administration’s resolve to modernise the health sector, improve service delivery, and ensure that every Abian has access to quality and affordable healthcare.
