A police officer was killed on Sunday after a Lexus car driver allegedly rammed into his motorcycle on the Third Mainland Bridge inward Oworonshoki, Lagos.
Police sources identified the deceased officer as ASP Ayodele Omoshehin, attached to the Tactical Squad, Ijora Olopa, Apapa, Lagos.
According to a statement issued on Sunday by the Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, Taofiq Adebayo, the tragic incident occurred around the Adekunle axis inward Iyana Oworonshoki.
Adebayo stated that the driver of a Lexus vehicle with registration number EPE 765 JN allegedly rammed into the police officer, who was riding a Bajaj motorcycle.
He disclosed that the officer died on the spot from injuries sustained in the collision, while the driver reportedly proceeded to the Adekunle Police Division to report himself immediately after the incident.
“Upon receipt of distress alerts, officials of LASTMA swiftly mobilised to the scene alongside officers of the Nigeria Police Force to initiate immediate traffic control, emergency safety measures, and preliminary incident management procedures,” the statement read.
According to Adebayo, traffic cones and other cautionary devices were strategically placed around the affected corridor to prevent secondary accidents and ensure the safety of other road users while police operatives commenced documentation and investigation into the incident.
He added that coordinated evacuation and recovery operations were immediately activated to remove the affected vehicles and restore normal traffic flow along the bridge corridor.
Despite the severity of the incident, Adebayo noted that traffic around the axis remained effectively managed due to the proactive intervention and operational efficiency of LASTMA officials deployed to the scene.
Reacting to the incident, the General Manager of LASTMA, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, stressed the need for motorists to exercise caution and strictly comply with traffic regulations.
He warned against reckless driving and excessive speeding, noting that such actions continue to endanger lives and contribute to avoidable road fatalities across Lagos State.
Bakare-Oki further urged road users to cultivate responsible driving habits and remain conscious of the sanctity of human life while using the roads.
