President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has appointed Professor Segun Aina as the new Registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), succeeding Professor Ishaq Oloyede, whose second and final tenure expires on July 31, 2026.
The appointment was announced on Thursday in a statement issued by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.
Aina’s emergence signals what the Presidency described as a generational transition in the leadership of Nigeria’s foremost tertiary admissions agency, as he is set to become the youngest registrar in the history of JAMB.
The incoming registrar, who turns 40 in July, is widely recognised for his expertise in computer engineering, digital systems, and institutional reform, with extensive experience in examination administration, public-sector technology deployment, and educational process optimisation.
He holds a Bachelor of Engineering degree in Computer Systems Engineering from the University of Kent, a Master’s degree in Internet Computing and Network Security, and a PhD in Digital Signal Processing from Loughborough University. He also attended the Senior Management Programme at the Lagos Business School.
Currently a Professor of Computer Engineering at Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Aina first became associated with JAMB during his National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) programme, where he gained early exposure to Nigeria’s admissions and examination systems.
According to the Presidency, those formative experiences shaped his enduring commitment to digital transformation and reforms within educational institutions.
Over the past 15 years, Aina has operated at the intersection of technology, governance, and institutional development, advising both federal and state governments on digital transition strategies, system architecture, and operational reforms.
At the age of 39, he became one of Nigeria’s youngest professors in Computer Engineering, a milestone now followed by his appointment to head one of the country’s most strategic educational agencies.
Beyond academia, Aina has consulted for major examination bodies, including the National Examinations Council (NECO) and the National Business and Technical Examinations Board (NABTEB), particularly in the areas of ICT infrastructure, examination integrity, and digital process management.
He is also affiliated with several professional organisations, including the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN), the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), and the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET).
The Presidency expressed confidence that Aina would consolidate on the reforms and institutional gains recorded under Oloyede’s leadership, especially in advancing transparency, efficiency, and technological innovation within JAMB.
President Tinubu, according to the statement, expects the incoming registrar to leverage his expertise and practical experience to further strengthen the examination body and build on the achievements recorded in recent years.
