Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has cautioned the National Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Senator Ajibola Basiru, to refrain from interfering in the political affairs of Rivers State.
Wike issued the warning while addressing residents of Oyigbo Local Government Area of the state, following comments attributed to Basiru over recent political developments in Rivers.
The APC National Secretary was reported to have criticised the party’s South-South Vice Chairman, Victor Giadom, accusing him of showing disrespect to Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara. Basiru was also said to have suggested that Giadom’s actions were aimed at currying favour with Wike.
The remarks came in the wake of Wike’s recent “thank you” visit to Gokana Local Government Area.
Reacting, Wike cautioned Basiru and other politicians against making inflammatory statements capable of escalating political tensions in the state, stressing the need for restraint and responsible political engagement.
“Let me warn those who come to Rivers State because they hear that we have resources. You come here, take what you want, and then begin to talk anyhow,” Wike said.
“I say it clearly—take this message to your National Secretary: leave Rivers State alone. Don’t take our support for Mr President for granted. Be careful with the statements you make,” he added.
The minister further alleged that some politicians were manoeuvring to gain access to the state’s funds, estimated at about ₦600 billion, warning against the politicisation of public resources meant for development.
According to him, such funds must be utilised strictly in the interest of Rivers people and not as tools for political manipulation.
Wike also stated that the APC and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) were now aligned on a common political objective—working towards the re-election of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the 2027 general election.
He urged politicians to avoid unnecessary provocations capable of undermining peace and stability in the state.
