The Lagos State Wastewater Management Office (LSWMO) has sealed four buildings across the state for environmental infractions, including the deliberate discharge of raw sewage into public drains and the operation of unsanitary facilities without approval.
According to Lagos State Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, the enforcement exercise was carried out on Thursday as part of ongoing efforts to curb environmental pollution and safeguard public health.
Among the sealed properties was a building at 34, Adeniji Adele, Lagos Island, shut down for the deliberate discharge of raw sewage into the public drain, causing offensive odour and exposing residents to health risks. A similar offence led to the closure of a three-storey building at 38, Adeniji Adele Street, also cited for channeling untreated wastewater into the open drainage system.
In Meiran, Alimosho, a block of shops along Powerline Road was sealed for illegally constructing and operating an unsanitary toilet facility on a road setback without a permit. Wahab said the operation of such a facility constitutes public nuisance, pollution, and a threat to community health.
Additionally, the state government shut a property at H29, House of Jesus Street, Langbasa, Ibeju-Lekki, for discharging raw sewage into public drains.
Wahab warned that the state will not tolerate actions that endanger lives or degrade the environment.
“Any act of environmental nuisance or pollution presents a serious danger to public health and will attract appropriate sanctions or prosecution,” he said.
He urged residents to adopt proper wastewater management practices and maintain good hygiene to promote environmental sustainability.
The Commissioner reiterated that Lagos will continue its strict enforcement against polluters as part of efforts to maintain a cleaner, healthier and more resilient environment.
