The Lagos State Wastewater Management Office (LSWMO) has intensified its clampdown on environmental offenders, sealing residential apartments in Abule Egba and Lekki for discharging raw sewage directly into public drains.
The action, officials say, followed public complaints and the state’s determination to maintain a cleaner, healthier environment.
The affected properties, located at 11 Victoria Onipede Street, Abule Egba, and 2 Tunde Fisayo Street, Lekki, were discovered to have been using pumping machines to channel untreated wastewater into drains, thereby constituting a public nuisance and posing serious health risks to residents.
The General Manager of LSWMO, Engr. Adefemi Afolabi, described the practice as a deliberate act of illegality, stressing that the owners opted for shortcuts rather than using accredited sewage dislodgers to properly evacuate their septic tanks.
He warned that such actions expose the public to communicable diseases and degrade the environment.
According to him, the agency’s Enforcement and Compliance Officers conducted thorough investigations, including photographic documentation, before sealing off the properties.
He noted that the evidence gathered would be used to ensure accountability and deter others from engaging in similar infractions.
Afolabi reiterated the state government’s zero tolerance for environmental pollution and urged residents to adopt proper wastewater management practices.
He maintained that all properties flouting regulations would continue to face sanctions in line with the Lagos State Environmental Management and Protection Law of 2017.
He further appealed to Lagosians to remain vigilant and report any environmental nuisance capable of endangering public health to the agency. Citizens can contact LSWMO via its official hotlines 08022022397, 07025332163, or through its social media platforms.
