The Jigawa State Police Command has arrested a newlywed woman over the alleged poisoning of her husband, who died after consuming a meal reportedly prepared by her in Gauza village, Jahun Local Government Area of the state.
The incident occurred on January 23, 2026, at about 5:00 p.m., according to the police.
Confirming the development in a statement on Saturday, the command’s Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Shi’isu Adam, said the deceased ate his lunch at home before suddenly taking ill.
“He was immediately rushed to a hospital for medical attention but was pronounced dead while receiving treatment,” the police spokesperson said.
Adam disclosed that following the incident, detectives from the Jahun Police Division launched an investigation and arrested the wife of the deceased as the principal suspect.
“During interrogation, the suspect allegedly confessed to poisoning her husband’s food with rat poison,” he said.
According to the PPRO, the suspect further claimed that she sent her cousin to purchase the rat poison allegedly used in committing the act.
“She reportedly stated that she was forced into the marriage by her parents, a situation she claimed influenced her actions,” SP Adam added.
He said the Commissioner of Police, Jigawa State Command, has ordered the transfer of the case to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Dutse, for a comprehensive investigation.
“The suspect will be charged to court upon the conclusion of the investigation,” the police spokesperson said.
Meanwhile, the command urged members of the public to remain calm and law-abiding, stressing the importance of resolving family and marital disputes through lawful means.
The statement warned against taking the law into one’s hands, noting that such actions often result in irreversible consequences, while assuring residents of the command’s commitment to justice and the protection of lives and property across the state.
“The suspect is currently in police custody, and the police will ensure that justice is served,” SP Adam said.
