The Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority has commenced the compensation process for tenants and occupants affected by land acquisition for the Blue Line rail depot in Okokomaiko, as part of efforts to expand the Lagos Rail Mass Transit system.
The development was announced during a stakeholder engagement held at the palace of the Oniba of Iba Kingdom, Oba Sulaimon Adeshina, where traditional leaders, affected residents and project officials met to deliberate on compensation procedures and timelines.
Speaking at the meeting, LAMATA’s Rail Project Manager, Abidemi Atobatele, outlined the framework for claims, stressing that the process would be conducted with utmost transparency.
“We are committed to ensuring that this compensation exercise is transparent, fair and timely,” he said. “All affected tenants have been properly enumerated and will be guided through the process to ensure a seamless experience.”
Atobatele explained that claimants are required to present specific documentation to facilitate verification and payment.
“Tenants were informed to come with their Project Affected Persons (PAP) cards, tenancy rent receipts, recent passport photographs and valid means of identification,” he said. “These documents are necessary to validate claims and ensure that the right persons are compensated.”
He added that the exercise has been carefully scheduled to allow for an orderly and efficient payout process.
“The compensation exercise will run over a defined period next week to ensure that every eligible person is attended to without confusion or delay,” Atobatele stated.
Also addressing the gathering, Oba Adeshina urged residents to cooperate fully with the state government, describing the rail project as a critical infrastructure initiative for the area.
“This project is for the development of our community and Lagos State at large,” the monarch said. “I appeal to all affected residents to cooperate with the authorities to ensure its successful execution.”
He further encouraged individuals with grievances or special considerations to channel their concerns appropriately.
“If there are issues or appeals, bring them through the palace. We will ensure such concerns are communicated to the appropriate authorities for consideration,” he added.
Officials at the meeting emphasised that the compensation exercise forms part of a broader land acquisition process required to create space for the rail depot, which will support the ongoing expansion of the Blue Line corridor.
“This is a key component of the Lagos Rail Mass Transit project aimed at improving mobility and boosting economic activities along this axis,” an official noted.
LAMATA reiterated that the procedures guiding the exercise are aligned with global standards for resettlement and compensation.
“Our processes are designed in line with international best practices to ensure fairness, accountability and inclusiveness for all project-affected persons,” Atobatele said.
