A 49-year-old man, Nnamdi Anyaji, has been arrested by police operatives for using an axe to kill his 68-year-old mother, Dorathy Anyaji.
The incident which happened in Anambra State stemmed from a cassava business dispute between the duo.
The spokesperson for Anambra State Police Command, Tochukwu Ikenga, said that the incident happened on Friday at about 2 p.m., in the Amudo Village in the Ekwulobia area of the state.
The PPRO noted that the suspect and his late mother disagreed about the proceeds from a cassava business, with the suspect accusing his mother of being dishonest.
Ikenga added that upon allegedly committing the crime, the suspect also attempted to take his own life before he was arrested by police operatives.Ikenga said,
“Police operatives attached to the Ekwulobia Divisional Police Station on April 11, 2025, by 1.40 p.m. arrested one Nnamdi Anyaji ‘M’ aged 49 years of Amudo Village,
Ekwulobia, who attempted to take his own life after killing his mother, Mrs Dorathy Anyaji, of the same address, aged 68 years.
“The operatives also recovered one axe at the scene.“Preliminary information reveals that the squabble started when the suspect accused the deceased of being dishonest about the money realised from a cassava business.”
He added that the suspect was taken into custody and would be arraigned upon the conclusion of an ongoing investigation.“
Meanwhile, the suspect is in custody and under close monitoring so as not to commit suicide and will be charged in court after the investigation,” the PPRO stated.
