‎‎The Enugu State Police Command has arrested a 24-year-old man, Ugwu Desmond, for the attempted murder and rape of a pregnant woman in Affa community, Udi Local Government Area of the state.‎‎

The incident, which occurred on the night of March 14, 2026, involved a 30-year-old victim whose identity has been withheld.

‎‎She was reportedly returning home from a neighbour’s residence along a quiet track in Amokwo-Affa when she was attacked.

‎‎Confirming the development in a statement on Sunday, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Daniel Ndukwe, said the suspect trailed the victim before launching a violent assault.‎‎

“The victim, unaware she was being followed, was suddenly attacked from behind by the suspect, who was armed with a cutlass. He forced her to the ground, held her by the neck in an attempt to strangle her, and covered her mouth to prevent her from raising an alarm,” Ndukwe stated.‎‎

He disclosed that the suspect dragged the victim into an uncompleted building, where he threatened to kill her if she resisted.‎‎“He subsequently forcefully raped her and inflicted varying degrees of injuries on her body,” he added.‎‎

Ndukwe said the victim’s ability to report the incident early the following morning led to swift police action.‎‎“Following the report made at about 6:15 a.m. on March 15, 2026, operatives of the Affa Police Division promptly mobilised and arrested the suspect,” he said.‎‎

The police spokesperson noted that the victim was immediately taken to a medical facility for examination and treatment, while investigators processed the scene.‎‎

“Critical exhibits were recovered from the scene, including the cutlass used in the attack and clothing bearing suspected blood and seminal stains,” he said.‎

According to him, the suspect has confessed to the crime, while investigations are ongoing.‎‎“The Commissioner of Police, Enugu State Command, CP Mamman Giwa, has directed a thorough investigation into the case and assured that the suspect will be promptly arraigned in court upon the conclusion of investigations,” Ndukwe stated.‎‎

He said the Commissioner described the incident as disturbing and reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to justice.‎‎“The Command remains resolute in ensuring that justice is served.

“Residents are urged to remain vigilant, look out for one another, and promptly report suspicious activities, as community awareness can be the difference between safety and tragedy,” he added.
