The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, has reaffirmed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s unwavering commitment to local government autonomy as a cornerstone for deepening democracy and accelerating grassroots development in Nigeria.
Idris made the statement on Friday in Abuja while receiving members of the National Forum of Ex-Councilors, who paid a courtesy visit to his office.
Describing local government as the tier of government closest to the people, the minister said President Tinubu is determined to restore its autonomy—politically and financially—in line with constitutional provisions.
“You are aware that the Attorney General approached the Supreme Court last year, seeking interpretation on this matter, and the court reaffirmed the constitutional need for local government councils to be autonomous and function effectively,” Idris said.
He expressed concern over the erosion of local government powers in recent years but emphasized that Tinubu’s democratic credentials drive his resolve to revive the third tier of government.
“For democracy to thrive at all levels, the local government structure must be strengthened. The president believes in empowering councils to perform their statutory roles in full capacity,” Idris stated.
The minister urged state governors to collaborate with the federal government to ensure the full restoration of the autonomy envisioned by the framers of the Nigerian Constitution.
He also commended the ex-councilors for their grassroots advocacy, encouraging them to support the Tinubu administration’s reform agenda by helping the public understand the long-term benefits.
“These reforms, though initially tough, are designed to reposition the country for sustainable prosperity,” Idris said.
“You are 70,000 strong nationwide, and I urge you to spread the message of renewed hope and economic revival.
”He cited the removal of fuel subsidies and the unification of exchange rates as examples of bold economic policies already yielding results, such as increased federal allocations to state and local governments.
The minister also noted the establishment of Development Commissions across all geopolitical zones as part of the administration’s inclusive growth strategy.
In appreciation of his efforts, the ex-councilors presented Idris with a “People-Oriented Award” for his outstanding contributions to democratic governance and public enlightenment.
Speaking on behalf of the delegation, Assistant Secretary of the Forum, Mr. Cole Michaels, praised the minister for revitalizing government information agencies and for effectively communicating the policies of the Tinubu administration.
The delegation was led by the Forum’s President, Mr. Auwal Kassim Hassan, and included representatives from across the federation.
